24 ноября 1886 Дорогой друг Антон Степанович! Вчера только Ваше милейшее письмо дошло до меня, хотя я уже знал от С[ергея] И[вановича] о том, что Вы написали «Маргариту Готье» и посвятили её мне. За посвящение Ваше благодарю Вас от всей души! Я был очень польщён и тронут Вашим вниманием и честью, которую Вы мне делаете. «Маргарита» теперь лежит у меня, и в свободные минутки, коих здесь у меня немного, я с великим интересом и удовольствием заглядываю в неё. Но, ради Бога, простите, что я не сейчас же отдам Вам подробный отчёт о испытанных мной впечатлениях. По первому взгляду она показалась мне очень интересной, особенно в том отношении, что Вы разом отошли далеко в сторону от пути, по которому шли до сих пор. «Маргарита» до такой степени не похожа на сюиту и симфонию, что, кажется, как будто другой человек её написал. Осталось то же изящество формы, гармонии, инструментовки. Но характер тем и приёмы совсем иные. Разумеется, прежде всего невольно представляется вопрос: лучше она симфонии и сюиты или нет? На этот вопрос я пока ещё не могу ответить, может быть оттого, что я так симпатизирую первым двум Вашим сочинениям, так люблю их, — что как бы с некоторым недоверием отношусь к пришельцу из Парижа, долженствующему затмить моих любимцев. Позвольте мне, дорогой Антон Степанович, прежде чем напишу Вам отчётливое и искреннее мнение о «Маргарите», хорошенько изучить её. Мы с С[ерrеем] И[нановичем] проиграли её, но я хочу проиграть её ещё несколько раз и даже дождаться исполнения, после которого мой взгляд на «Маргариту» вполне определится. Во всяком случае, позвольте мне быть совершенно откровенным и не скрывать кажущихся мне недостатков. Я слишком высоко ставлю Ваш яркий, симпатичный талант, чтобы ограничиваться одними комплиментами. 24 November 1886 Dear friend Anton Stepanovich! Your most sweet letter reached me only yesterday, although I already knew from Sergey Ivanovich that you had written "Marguerite Gautier" and dedicated it to me. I thank you for your dedication with all my heart! I was most flattered and touched by your attention and the honour that you do me. "Marguerite" is now lying with me, and in my free moments, of which I have few here, I glance through it with great interest and pleasure. But, for God's sake, forgive me for not giving you a detailed account of my impressions immediately. At first glance it appeared very interesting to me, particularly in the sense that you have suddenly diverged far from the path you had been following hitherto. "Marguerite" is so far removed from a suite or a symphony, that it is almost as if it were written by someone else. The same elegance of form, harmony and instrumentation remains. But the character of the themes and the techniques are altogether different. Naturally, the first question that inevitably arises is: is this better than your symphony or suite? I cannot yet answer this question, perhaps because I am so sympathetic to your first two works, I am so fond of them — that I feel somewhat suspicious of the newcomer from Paris, setting out to eclipse my favourites. Permit me, dear Anton Stepanovich, before writing a coherent and sincere opinion of "Marguerite", to study it thoroughly. Sergey Ivanovich and I have played it through, but I want to play it through a few more times and even wait for a performance, after which my view of "Marguerite" will be fully determined. In any case, permit me to be perfectly frank and not to conceal any shortcomings I perceive. I value your brilliant, sympathetic talent too highly to confine myself to compliments alone. Until then, I shake your hand warmly, and thank you again, and again, and again for your dedication. I really do very much appreciate this expression of your sympathy. Keep well, golubchik!
