26 октября 1886 с[ело] Майданово Только что вернулся в Майданово на всё праздники и поспешаю хоть несколько уплатить всё свои письменные долги. Их набралось так много, что убедительно прошу [простить] краткость и небрежность писания. Я продирижировал 7 репетиций и с каждым разом делаюсь самоувереннее и спокойнее. Артисты (как певцы, так и оркест­ровые музыканты) выказывают мне всячески сочувствие и любовь и это главнейшим образом облегчает мне трудную задачу поставить трудную оперу. После праздников 7-го числа начинаются снова ежедневные репетиции, и опера, вероятно, пройдёт между 15 и 20 числами. О первом представлении непременно буду телеграфировать Вам. Уставал я от репетиций ужасно, до полного физического и нравственного изнеможения, но, по-видимому, на здоровье моё эта деятельная жизнь повлияла хорошо, ибо все мои болезни и недомогания как рукой сняло. Предвижу, что буду сильно волноваться на 1-ом представлении, — но ведь все равно я бы волновался, если б и скрывался где-нибудь за кулисами. В то же время я работал над «Чародейкой» и сделал переложение всего 2-го действия. Я сам изумлён, откуда у меня набралось силы и времени окончить успешно как раз то, что необходимо было, ввиду спешности окончить до праздников. Непомерно рад и счастлив, что нахожусь в деревне, — но отдыхать не придётся. Буду с завтрашнего дня все своё время отдавать «Чародейке», чтобы успеть до 7-го числа сделать 3-е действие. Ип[полит] Вас[ильевич] уехал в Петербург. С Кашперовым при встрече раскланиваемся, и он по-прежнему снисходительно-покровительственно обходится со мной. Майков всячески старается выказать мне своё нерасположение. Но чего мне бояться? Видел декорации. Они великолепны. Вальц отличился. Будьте здоровы, дорогая Юлия Петровна! С Новым годом! 26 October 1886 Maydanovo village I have just returned to Maydanovo for the holidays, and I am hurrying to pay at least some of my epistolary debts. These are so numerous that I earnestly request you to forgive the brevity and carelessness of the writing. I have conducted 7 rehearsals, and each time I become more self-assured and calm. The artists (the singers, just as much as the orchestral musicians) afford me every possible sympathy and love, and this greatly facilitates the the difficult task of putting on my difficult opera. After the holidays, daily rehearsals recommence on the 7th, and the opera will, probably, go on between the 15th and 20th. I shall certainly telegraph you about the first performance. I have been awfully tired from rehearsals, to the point of complete physical and mental exhaustion, but, evidently, this active life has had a good effect on my health, because all my illnesses and ailments have disappeared, as if by the wave of a hand. I predict that I shall be very anxious at the 1st performance — but I should be just as anxious if I were hiding somewhere behind the scenes. At the same time, I have been working on "The Enchantress", and have made an arrangement of the whole of the 2nd act. I myself am astonished at how I found the strength and time to successfully complete what had to be done, in view of the urgency to finish before the holidays. I am excessively glad and fortunate to find myself in the country — but I shall not be resting. As from tomorrow, I shall be devoting all my time to "The Enchantress", in order to complete the 3rd act before the 7th. Ippolit Vasilyevich has left for Petersburg. Whenever I meet Kashperov, we exchange bows, and he behaves as condescendingly and patronisingly towards me as before. Maykov is trying in every possible way to show his antipathy towards me. But what do I have to fear? I saw the scenery. It is magnificent. Valts has excelled himself. Keep well, dear Yuliya Petrovna! Happy New Year! Congratulations and I wish you better days ahead!!! P.
