Most respected and most kind
Vladimir Petrovich!

Shpazhinsky writes to me that you recommend I write an official letter to Ivan Aleksandrovich regarding the fact that I want my opera to be performed at the very beginning of the season. Before writing this letter, I want to say to you that the idea of opening the season with my opera, i.e. giving it on 1st September, confuses me somewhat. After all, no matter how carefully it is prepared at Lent, the opera will still have to be rehearsed for at least three weeks once activities at the Mariinsky Theatre resume. In the meantime, so far as I know, it is impossible to gather all the artists together in August. Furthermore, it seems to me that putting on a new opera at a time when all manner of "Arcadias" and "Livadies" are still in full swing is rather odd. But most importantly, I am convinced that it is impossible in February to predetermine which day of the new season an opera should be prepared for. Only once everyone has assembled and when rehearsals are in full swing can a date be set for the date of the performance. There is only one thing I wish for with all the strength of my soul: that my opera should be put on as the first new opera of the next season, but I am rather inclined to think that October or, at worst, the end of September, is the most favourable time for staging a new opera. However, I shall do whatever the Directorate wishes, and even if this means I have to stay in Petersburg throughout August, it goes without saying that I am happy to do so.

I shall be coming to Petersburg at the end of the first week of Lent, bringing the piano reduction and choral parts of "The Enchantress". Then we will discuss everything in detail.

Keep well, most kind Vladimir Petrovich!

Your sincerely devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky
