Бедняга! Мне в сам[ом] деле жаль тебя было, когда читал твоё письмо. Ну уж эта воинская повинность. Я ставил себя в твоё положение 30 лет тому назад. Боже мой, да я бы не вынес. А впрочем, может быть оно в конце концов полезно. Посылаю малую толику. Отвечай—дошло ли. В скором времени опять пришлю. Обнимаю! В августе можешь приехать ко мне отъедаться, если хочешь. До свиданья, Димочка!

Poor fellow! I was genuinely very sorry for you when I read your letter [1]. Well that's military service [2]. I stood in your position 30 years ago. My God, I couldn't bear it. However, it might turn out to be useful in the end. I'm sending you a small amount. Let me know whether it's arrived. I'll send some more again shortly. I hug you! At the end of August you can come to me for a meal, if you want. Until we meet, Dimochka!
