Gracious friend!

I'm not in the least angry with you, indeed not at all. This is why I didn't write anything about the opera, because it would have been too embarrassing to tell anyone about it. Nevertheless, it's now such common knowledge that I think it's unnecessary to hide it from you. The opera is completely finished, but the piano reduction hasn't yet been done. I never rose from my seat all summer, believing that the deadline for the competition was 1st January; it turns out that I have to wait until next November for the judgement. You know that, as it turns out, the publishing rights belong to the directors of the Musical Society, and therefore I cannot promise you anything. And yet, will I receive the prize? That is the question. In any case, it's premature to talk of it. I've received the money from you, and I'm very sorry that there's nothing more I can wring from you. My accounts were in a terrible muddle, and I would have been prepared, like Mitrofaniya, to undertake all sorts of fabrication just to make money. Alas! Besides the questionable award of the prize, I'm not expecting anything.

If I'm not mistaken, you only have a little left now. I ask you to use the remaining money to send me 12 cabinet and 12 small pictures from Lorenz. be so kind as to see to this quickly.

I have no influence at the theatre, and you vainly imagine that my patronage is worth anything to Merten. The point is that he positioned himself very badly, and they aren't giving him a penny. Shramek's place will probably be taken by Gerber. However, I shall certainly discuss him with Savitsky, upon whom everything depends. You are very much mistaken in thinking that the production of "The Oprichnik" depends on Merten; it hinges on Savitsky and Gerber. If I didn't consider it dishonourable to deprive you of this one-off, then I would be vigorously resisting this production. Don't expect anything good from the pitifully miserable opera here. The choruses are terrible; it will be a ballet orchestra; the singers, apart from Kadmina, are loathsome — in a word it will be nothing other than a disgrace.

As for Merten staying put, I'll be very much asking for this; it seems possible.

Stasov wrote to me that you're publishing various new works by the circle; when they're ready, be sure to send them to me. Everyone here is mercilessly berating you for the terrible prices of my works. Wouldn't it be to your advantage to reduce them? There would be more custom. I'm convinced that not a single devil has bought "The Oprichnik". Be so good as to find out who else is writing "Vakula"? It's very possible that I'll somehow find myself in Petersburg.

Please, answer this letter, and don't forget about the pictures.

P. Tchaikovsky
