Dear friend!

At yesterday's meeting of the directors (attended by Rukavishnikov, Jurgenson, Taneyev and I) it was decided that if, despite all our persuasion, you still have no wish to continue your duties as conservatory inspector, then the directors will offer you, besides the pension stipulated in the Society's journal for 1881 (February) — of 1500 rubles, plus an additional 1500 rubles for the first four years, so that over the course of the next 4 years you will received 3000 rubles, and thereafter 1500, in any case — but it is certainly hoped that you may subsequently be awarded an additional 1500 rubles. You will be asked to stay in your apartment until January 1890 [1].

I hug you.

P. Tchaikovsky

Being in domestic circumstances which prevent me from continuing my service to the Conservatory and to the R. M. S., I have the honour humbly to petition the Directors of the Moscow Section asking that an order be made for my dismissal and the transfer of my duties to another person.

Notes and References

  1. The new director of the Moscow Conservatory, Vasily Safonov, had insisted he would only take up his appointment if Karl Albrecht were dismissed as the conservatory's inspector. There being no other candidate for the post of director, Tchaikovsky wanted to help Albrecht to save face by leaving his post voluntarily, and drafted him a notice of resignation, enclosed with the above letter, in return for an enhanced pension.
