Dear friend!

I have just sent an official letter to the directorate, stating that,
1) I refuse to conduct six concerts, and
2) I resign my directorship.

Everything that I write in that letter is a thorough and most sincere account of the circumstances that compel me to leave. If this precipitates your departure, then perhaps the coup d'Etat will be too effective. In general I should very much like for you and Rukavishnikov to remain. Wouldn't you frankly admit that you would rather remain a director, provided you are spared the back-breaking costs?

It will be necessary to convene a meeting. Please, in the event that they start to suggest that I might be cajoled, then tell them that I have written to you privately that I have flatly decided to leave.

I approve in advance all your actions in matters concerning "The Oprichnik". The more vigorously you act, the better. It's not that I'm particularly chasing after performance fees from private theatres, but the principle of retaining authors' rights to allow or prohibit the production of an opera is extremely important.

Klimenko is indeed ungrateful, but a lot can be forgiven now that he is dying. This is a person with great ability and great ambition, who was unlucky. Hence the terrible bitterness. But in our last meeting he so touchingly asked me for forgiveness, that I forgot everything. A request: for God's sake send 50 rubles in a sealed envelope to Sofya Fyodorovna Larosh, Tverskaya Boulevard, Kirikova House, apartment 7. And tell no-one about this. I'll explain what the matter is when we meet.

Forgive me for not writing in detail. I'm very tired from the official letter.
