26 февр[аля]/9 марта 1890 г[ода] Милый Модя! Я вчера не отвечал тебе на вопрос, когда вернусь и что собираюсь делать. Как только кончу черновую оперу, начну сейчас же полный клавираусцуг. Для этой работы, которая будет скучна, но очень легка, я хочу переехать в другой город, но не ехать домой. Домой я поеду, когда кончу клавираусцуг. Куда же именно поеду, — этого я ещё не решил. Палены, от которых я теперь тем более не могу скрыться, что Назар совершенно влюблён в их служителя Карла, портят мне Рим. Палены — добрые, но ужасные люди! Они приставали ко мне, чтобы я им играл «Пиковую даму»!!! Но, во всяком случае, я поеду куда-нибудь южнее и, вероятнее всего, просто в самый Неаполь. Я сегодня в страшной суете был. Получаю письмо от Арто, что Capoul сочинил великолепное либретто из русской жизни (!!!) и желает, чтобы музыку написал не кто иной, как я, и что для этой цели он едет сюда!!!??? Сейчас же полетела огромная телеграмма, что я оперу писать не могу, а что вечером сегодня еду в Россию. Потом пришлось длинное письмо писать ей. Я кончил 6-ю картину и начал сочинять интродукцию-увертюру. Если завтра не придёт 7-я картина, я буду очень огорчен. Ненавистно для меня прерывать именно эту черновую работу. Кажется, что VI картина вышла хорошо, и теперь я очень рад, что она есть, — без неё было бы недостаточно округлено. Я только от тебя узнал о Сапельникове. Какой он бессовестный. Я ждал телеграммы 23-го, страшно волновался и беспокоился, решил, что он осрамился! Хотя бы 2 слова написал. Свинство! Целую, обнимаю. П. Чай[ковский] Но не могу не сказать, что ты был удивительно аккуратен в высылке либретто. Спасибо! Боюсь, что завтра не придёт 7-я картина. Что я буду делать? Не знаю, известно ли тебе, что Феклуша скончалась 18 февр[аля]. Кажется, Назар тебе писал об этом.

26 February/9 March 1890 Dear Modya! Yesterday I didn't answer your question about when I'll be back and what I'm intending to do. As soon as I finish the draft of the opera, I'll start at once on the full piano reduction. For this work, which will be tedious, but very straightforward, I want to move to another city, but not to go home. I'll travel home when I've finished the piano reduction. I haven't decided yet exactly where I'll be going. The Pahlens, from whom I'm all the more unable to hide since Nazar is completely in love with their servant Carla, are spoiling Rome for me. The Pahlens are good, but awful people! They pestered me to play "The Queen of Spades for them!!! But, in any case, I'll be going somewhere further south, and in all probability, just to Naples itself. I was in a terrible turmoil today. I received a letter from Artôt that Capoul has compiled a magnificent libretto from Russian life (!!!), and wants no-one but me to write the music, and for this purpose he's coming here!!!??? I just sent an enormous telegram saying that I couldn't write an opera, and that I was going to Russia this evening. Then I had to write her a long letter. I've finished the 6th scene, and started to compose the introduction-overture. If the scene doesn't come tomorrow, I'll be most upset. I'm loathe to interrupt this rough work. I think that scene VI has come out well, and I'm very glad that it's there — it wouldn't have been rounded enough without it. I only found out about Sapelnikov from you. How shameless he is. I was awaiting a telegram on the 23rd, terribly anxious and worried, deciding that he had disgraced himself! He could have at least written 2 words. How thoughtless! Kisses, hugs. P. Tchaikovsky I can't help but say that you've been remarkably timely in sending the libretto. Thank you! I'm afraid that the 7th scene won't come tomorrow. What will I do?
