Рим 27 Maртa/8 апр[еля] 1890 Очень захотелось тебе хоть немножко написать. Я сюда приехал сегодня в 7 часов утра. Трудно выразить, до чего мне приятно было вновь увидеть город, который некогда я так любил и где мечтал до конца дней жить по зимам. Глубоко раскаиваюсь, что не приехал сюда прямо. Весьма вероятно, что здесь я и не подумал бы предаваться той хандре, которая угнетала меня во Флоренции постоянно, кроме часов занятий. Даже постоянная мысль о Н. Д. Кондратьеве, с которым неизбежно связаны все мои римские воспоминания, не отравляет приятного сознавания себя в Риме. Напротив, даже как-то сладко вспоминать об этом милом человеке именно здесь, где он всегда сиял счастием. Тебе, конечно, известно уже, что опера сочинена и клавираусцуг сделан и даже уже гравируется. Не знаю, что будет через год, — а теперь я свою милую «Пиковую даму» люблю так же, как одного воспитанника 4-го класса Учил[ища] правоведения, т. е. ужасно. Очень может быть, что изменю ей, как изменил «Орлеанской деве» и «Чародейке», но теперь мне кажется, что история всего мира разделяется на 2 периода. 1-ый период всё, что произошло от сотворения мира до сотворения «Пиковой дамы». Второй период начался месяц тому назад, когда «Пиковая дама» сотворена, хотя и то ещё не вполне, ибо инструментовка займёт месяца три. Завтра принимаюсь за инструментовку 1-го действия. Если буду жив и здоров, то через месяц, даже меньше, буду иметь удовольствие тебя увидеть. Хочу своё рождение 25 апр[еля] отпраздновать в Петербурге. А потом поеду во Фроловское. По окончании же инструментовки оперы хочу посетить Гранкино, Каменку, Кавказ. Обнимаю тебя, Бобик! У тебя, вероятно, скоро начнутся приготовления к экзамену. Можешь, ввиду скорого моего прибытия и экзаменов, не отвечать мне. Твой, П. Чайковский Всем передай поцелуи и поклоны. Какая милая Ната и какие очаровательные письма она пишет! И при этом не требует ответа. Душка Ната. Про какую твою историю, благоприятно кончившуюся, писал мне Коля? Я ничего не знаю.

Rome 27 March/7 April 1890 I've very much wanted to write at least a little to you. I arrived here today at 7am. It is difficult to express how pleased I was to see again the city that I once loved so much, and where I would have been content to spend all my winters until the end of my days. I deeply regret that I didn't come straight here. In all probability I would not have indulged in melancholy thoughts here as those which constantly oppressed me in Florence, except when I was busy. Even the ever-present thoughts of N. D. Kondratyev, which are inevitably associated with all my Roman memories, does not poision my pleasant disposition in Rome. On the contrary, I even have some sweet memories of this dear man right here, where he always beamed with happiness. You, of course, will be aware that the opera has been composed, the piano reduction made, and it's already been engraved. I do not know what the year holds in store, but for now I love my dear "Queen of Spades" as much as a pupil of the 4th class of the School of Jurisprudence, i.e. terribly. It may very well be that I will change my mind, just as I did with "The Maid of Orleans" and "The Enchantress", but right now it seems to me that the history of the world is divided into 2 periods: the 1st is everything that happened from the creation of the world up to the creation of "The Queen of Spades". The second period commenced a month ago, when "The Queen of Spades" was created, although still not completely because the instrumentation will take three months. Tomorrow I will set about the instrumentation of the 1st act. So long as I'm alive and well then in a month, or even less, I'll have the pleasure of seeing you. I want to celebrate my birthday on 25 April in Petersburg, and then travel on to Frolovskoye. After completing the instrumentation of the opera I want to visit Grankino, Kamenka and the Caucuses.
