22 августа Каменка Милый друг! Я только сегодня в первый раз увидел полное собрание моих сочинений и пришёл в большое огорчение. Говорю не про самую музыку; кажется, в этом отношении все благополучно. Но что за полнейшее пренебрежение ко всему остальному! Мне попался том IV. Раскрываю и ставлю себя в положение человека, с моими произведениями не знакомого. Что же я вижу? На постылой коричневой бумаге первого заглавного листа: П. Чайковский Полное собрание сочинений том IV Переворачиваю. Тут читаю то же самое по-французски. Переворачиваю и вижу следующее: Содержание Стр. № 1. Утр[енняя] мол[итва] 4 2. Зимн[ее утро] 4 3. Игр[а в лошадки] и т. д., и т. д., и т. д. Спрашивается: содержание чего? Это совершенно неизвестно. Предполагаю, что это содержание 4-го тома. Но ведь этот четвёртый том состоит из двух опусов. Первый есть сборник детских пиэс. Где же это сказано? Нигде. Так что человек, не знающий моих сочинений, подумает, что я всерьёз сочиняю «Похороны куклы» и т. п. Ведь весь смысл этих невинных и близких к банальности вещей в том, что они предназначены для детей!!!! Как же возможно не поставить самого главного, общего заглавия целого ряда пиэс? Это непростительно. Далее. На стр[анице] 29 напечатано: «В церкви». На странице] 30: Этюд. Кто же знает, что пиэсой «В церкви» кончился ряд детских пиэс и начался новый ряд, имеющий совершенно другой характер, но тоже предназначенный для известного разряда играющих. Неужели полное собрание значит сваленное кое-как в кучу всё, что вышло из-под пера одного автора? Детские пиэсы посвящены моему любимому племяннику, который этим посвящением очень гордился и ценил. Следующие 12 пиэс посвящены Модесту, который тоже очень дорожил посвящением. Ни того, ни другого посвящения нет!!!!! Ей-Богу, грустно постоянно в бочках мёда встречать ушаты дёгтя. П. Ч. Везде сказано, что полное собрание мной пересмотрено. Ноты я пересмотрел. Но заглавных листов ты мне никогда не показывал.

22 August Kamenka Dear friend! It was only today that I saw the complete collection of my works for the first time, and I was greatly upset. I'm not talking about the music itself; everything seems fine in this respect. But what an utter disregard there is for everything else! Coming across volume IV, I open it and put myself in the position of a person who is unfamiliar with my works. What do I see? On the horrid brown paper of the first title page: P. Tchaikovsky Complete Collected Works Volume IV I turn the page. Here I read the same thing in French. I turn the page and see the following: Contents Page № 1. Morning Prayer 4 2. Winter Morning 4 3. Playing Hobby-Horses etc., etc., etc. The question is: the contents of what? This is completely unknown. Presumably this is the contents of the 4th volume. But this fourth volume consists of two opuses. The first is the collection of children's pieces. Where does it say this? Nowhere. So a person unfamiliar with my works will think that "The Doll's Funeral" etc. are serious compositions. After all, the whole idea of these innocuous and almost commonplace items is that they are intended for children!!!! How is it possible to omit the most important, overall title of a whole series of pieces? This is unforgivable. Carrying on. "In Church" is printed on page 29. On page 30: "Etude". How does one know that "In Church" was the last in a series of children's pieces, and a new series has begun, which not only has a completely different character, but is also intended for a more accomplished category of performer. Does complete collection really mean everything from the pen of a single author, thrown together willy-nilly? The children's pieces are dedicated to my beloved nephew, who is very proud and appreciative of this dedication. The next 12 pieces are dedicated to Modest, who also greatly treasured the dedication. There is no dedication on either of them!!!!! My God, it's sad to keep finding tar in barrels of honey. P. T. It says everywhere that I've reviewed the complete collection. I've reviewed the music, but you never showed me the title pages.
