Gracious Sir!

Forgive me for, even without having had the pleasure of becoming personally acquainted with you, appealing to you with a request. I have a protegé, a young baritone Borisoglebsky, who has recently graduated from a course at the Moscow Conservatory, and is just about to complete his military service. He should like to be introduced to the stage of the Kharkov opera theatre, predominantly because the public of this city were very fond of his late brother [1], also a baritone, who passed away in the flower of youth some years ago. I am asking if you could be grant me the service of recommending Mr Borisoglebsky's debut to the management of your theatre. Is this possible? If so, then when should he come? I should be extremely obliged if you would send me the answers to these questions.

With sincere respect I have the honour to be your humble servant,

P. Tchaikovsky

As well as having a voice, he is generally talented and has a good stage presence. He is very poor, and therefore, in the event of a successful debut, acceptance into your company, even on merely modest terms initially, would be a godsend for him.
