25 October 1891

Golubchik Sergey Ivanovich!

I'm needed at the theatre today (a new tenor is debuting in "Onegin" [1], and the Directorate have entrusted me to determine whether he is suitable). Consequently I'm unable to bring you the full score of "Iolande" myself. I am sending it to you, and please, give me a note of receipt, otherwise I shall worry [2]. Once again I reiterate that I consider myself enormously fortunate and downright blessed that you have taken it upon yourself to undertake such a difficult and tedious task [3]. On the other hand, I should not want you to feel under any obligation to me out of friendship. Do as you wish.

The full score is completely ready (i.e. as I am sending it to you), except for the tempi and metronome markings, as well as the precise designation of the numbers. I shall do this later on the full score and on your (oh happiness!) reduction.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

1. On Sunday Ziloti will be calling on you to listen to Rakhmaninov's concerto [4].

2. When we meet, say nothing to me about "Iolande", neither praise nor (heaven forfend) censure. Once the opera has been given, then you can criticise as much as you want.
