3 июня Лондон Милый друг Саша! Дело, о котором я хотел говорить с тобой, можно, конечно, обсудить и письменно. Но мне просто хотелось придраться к случаю, чтобы и тебя повидать, и в Париже дня три поблагодушествовать. Но я ведь воображал, что ты где-нибудь около Гавра или Трувиля! Конечно, так далеко мне нельзя ехать, ибо время дорого: нужно успеть за лето массу наработать. Дело вот в чем. Петербургская Дирекция поручила мне предложить тебе профессорство и переговорить об этом. Раз что ты бесповоротно решил эту зиму остаться в Париже, то говорить нечего. Конечно, они целый год ждать не могут и пригласят кого-нибудь другого. Если бы ты начал колебаться, не принять ли их предложение, то войди в переписку с Юлием Ивановичем Иогансеном. Засим Дирекция предлагает тебе в будущем сезоне дирижировать одним концертом и в этом же концерте играть, причём я обещался тебе продирижировать. Они хотели, чтобы я взял на себя все концерты, но я согласился только на 3, а на остальные они приглашают Направника, тебя, Римского-Корсакова и т. д. Голубчик, напиши или им прямо, или мне (в Клин), согласен ли ты на это. Но лучше пиши им прямо, ибо я отсюда заеду к Ментер, потом в Полтавскую губ[ернию] к Модесту, в Курскую к брату Николаю и ещё к Масловым, так что попаду в Клин не ранее июля. Третьего дня имел со своей 4-ой симфонией огромный успех. Жизнь здесь адская, — ни минуты нет покоя, и иногда дохожу до сумасшествия. Удрать хочется ужасно, — но жалко упустить Кембриджскую комедию с моим докторством. А всё-таки жаль, что с тобой не увидимся. Ну, будь здоров, голубчик. Целую ручку Веры. Твой, П. Чайковский

3 June London Dear friend Sasha!! It's indeed possible to discuss the matter I wanted to talk to you about in writing. But I was simply wanting to use this opportunity to see you and to spend three restful days in Paris. I'd imagined that you were somewhere near Havre or Trouville! Of course I can't go that far because time is precious: I must do lots of work over summer. Anyway, the matter is as follows. The Petersburg Directorate entrusted me to offer you a professorship and talk to you about it. If you have definitely decided to stay in Paris this winter there's nothing to talk about. They can't of course wait for a whole year, so they'll invite somebody else instead. If you're in two minds about accepting their offer, enter into correspondence with Yuly Ivanovich Iogansen . The Directorate is also offering you the chance to conduct one of the concerts next season and to play in the same concert too while I, as I had promised them, do the conducting for you. They wanted me to take up all the concerts but I agreed only to do 3, and for the remainder they are inviting Nápravník, you, Rimsky-Korsakov etc. Golubchik, write straight to the Directorate or to me (at Klin), if you agree with that. But better write directly to them as I will visit Menter from here, then to Poltava province to see Modest, to Kursk province to brother Nikolay and also to the Maslovs, and therefore I shall not make it to Klin earlier than July. On the third day here I had enormous success with my Symphony No. 4. But life here is like hell—there is no single peaceful moment and sometimes I'm losing my mind. I so terribly want to escape, - but it would be a pity to miss the Cambridge comedy with my doctorate. All the same, it's a shame that we won't see each other. Anyway, keep well, golubchik.
