Most respected Eduard Frantsevich!

I have just received a letter from Krasnokutsky [1], who writes that you want to look over the Serbian March. Could you take the trouble to order it from the Conservatory, where it was sent two days ago? By the way, I think it would be remiss of me not to inform you that this March, besides two trumpets, requires two cornets in B-flat and, besides two large flutes, two piccolos [2].

I shake your hand firmly.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

  2. The Slavonic March — referred to here by Tchaikovsky as the "Serbian March" — was conducted by Eduard Nápravník at a charity concert at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg on 26 December 1876/7 January 1877.
