C'est inouil!

A thought occurred to me today. The Plesskys sent me 200 rubles. I looked at a lot of upright pianos today. The cheapest cost 225 rubles. But this was so abominable that I there's no way in the world I would send them that. The best and new' ones cost at least 350 to 375 rubles. It's impossible to obtain an upright in the way I did for your grand piano. The Conservatory don't have any. Occasionally, of course, a used upright can be bought for less. But, firstly, a used piano can't be recommended, and secondly, it's necessary to wait for the opportunity, and the opportunity may not present itself. In general, do they definitely want an upright piano? If this is because there's no space, then there's nothing to discuss. But if the Plesskys think that an upright will be cheaper, then they're mistaken. At Jurgenson's today I saw several Steinway grand pianos, which cost 1000 rubles. And the main thing is that I can obtain a grand piano from the Conservatory at a very cheap price, even though there are no uprights there. In short, tell them that I can't find a good upright that I could vouch for, for less than 350 rubles. I could obtain a good grand piano (which costs far more) for the same price. Please, my Angel, discuss this with Vera Andreyevna, and let them give me a firm answer. I wanted to send them an upright for 350 rubles, but I'm afraid that they won't like this price. I repeat, I can't obtain a good instrument for less.

How ignorant is your nephew? Were it not for the fact that you told him to give the Plessky's money to me, he could at least have taken the trouble to come himself. He sent this money with Zhenya Peresleni, and then he even insisted that I send him a receipt! C'est inouil!

I hug you tightly.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

I would ask you to reply to this letter as soon as possible.
