г[ород] Клин, Моск[овской] губ[ернии] Дорогой друг Антон Степанович! Боюсь, что письмо это не дойдёт до Вас, ибо адрес Ваш, присланный мне Ал[ександрой] Ив[ановной] Губерт, весьма недостаточен. Но это не беда, ибо то, что я Вам хочу сказать, терпит отлагательства, и может быть, осенью удастся повидаться и побеседовать устно. Когда 2 года тому назад я прослушал «Сон воеводы» у Серг[ея] Ив[ановича] (при Альтани), то опера Ваша понравилась мне, но с большими оговорками. Многое тогда для меня не выяснилось, и как это нередко бывает после первого поверхностного знакомства, — я не отдал тогда Вашему чудесному сочинению должной справедливости. Теперь я оперу хорошо изучил и, проиграв её от начала до конца 2 раза подряд, могу иметь о ней настоящее суждение. Чем более я узнавал её, тем более красоты её пленяли меня, и теперь я того мнения, что это одна из самых прелестных и симпатичных опер, какие существуют. Некоторые же места оперы безусловно превосходны. Сюда я особенно отношу первую картину четвёртого действия, которая, по-моему, и по музыке великолепна, и в сценическом отношении чрезвычайно удалась. Все второе действие тоже в высшей степени удачно. Мизгирь Вам чрезвычайно удался: шествие великолепно. Одним словом, я ужасно рад, милый Антон Степанович, что могу самым искреннейшим образом поздравить Вас с сочинениям прекрасной, симпатичной и, как мне кажется, очень эффектной оперы. Я надеюсь, что и в публике опера произведёт сенсацию, а впрочем, если нет, что за беда! Напишите несколько ещё других. Town of Klin, Moscow province Dear friend Anton Stepanovich! I fear that this letter will not reach you, because your address provided to me by Aleksandra Ivanovna Hubert is very inadequate. But this does not matter, because what I want to tell you is a subject for deliberation, and perhaps we shall be able see each other in the autumn and talk in person. When 2 years ago I heard "The Voyevoda's Dream" with Sergey Ivanovich (under Altani), I enjoyed your opera, but with great reservations. Much was not clear to me then, and as so often happens after the first superficial acquaintance, I did not give you wonderful work the justice it deserved. Now I have studied the opera thoroughly, and, having played it from beginning to end twice in a row, I can form a true judgement about it. The more I came to know it, the more I was captivated by its beauty, and now I am of the opinion that this is one of the most delightful and sympathetic operas in existence. Some parts of the opera are unquestionably excellent. Here in particular I include the first scene of the fourth act, which, in my opinion, is magnificent both in musical terms and extremely successful in terms of stage performance. The whole of the second act is also a great success. Your Mizgir was remarkably successful; the procession is magnificent. In short, I am awfully glad, dear Anton Stepanovich, to be able to most sincerely congratulate you on the composition of a beautiful, sympathetic and, as it seems to be, a most effective opera. I hope that the opera will cause a sensation amongst the public, but if not, this does not matter! Just write a few more.
