Dear Sasha
I fear that you'll be grumbling about me for a number of transgressions. Firstly, I didn't go to the quartet evening when your 2nd quartet was played; secondly, I didn't go to the Russian concert, and, 3rd, I didn't got to see you at all, not counting an unsuccessful evening visit. In Petersburg I found myself with an old malady, i.e. a painful yearning for solitude, and an utter inability to socialise or to converse about anything. Only towards the end of my stay in Piter did this begin to pass, but then I did not manage to catch you. Don't be angry. I love you very much. My regards to our mutual friends — Nikolay Andreyevich, Lyadov, Verzhbilovich. Yours P. Tchaikovsky |
