12 July 1888 I've just returned from Petersburg. My time there was sent propitiously. I went to Tsarskoye with Annette, and to Pavlovsk; I spent a whole day in Peterhof and besides the music I was delighted to see the royal family; I saw Zasyadko [1] incessantly; we caroused a great deal, and left there together. He was travelling to Kharkov province. We went by passenger train; I've meant to do this for some time, in order to see Okulovo, Bologoe, Vyshny Volochek etc. in the daytime [2]. It was very pleasant. On the day of my departure I arranged lunch at home: Zet [3] and Zasyadko were there. Your cook made wonderful cakes and schnitzels. And with that, I kiss and hug you both. I still have whole dozens of letters to write. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky |
