Каменка 29 авг[уста] Милый Толичка! Живу себе весьма изрядно. Работаю так усердно, что иногда устаю, — но возможность в известные часы ходить и вообще привольный образ жизни спасают от усталости. Погода стоит (как всегда, когда я в Каменке) сухая, и пыль много портит удовольствия прогулок. По вечерам является Коля Переслени, и мы винтим вдвоём. От Саши и Веры известия покамест всё очень приятные. Вера должная родить в начале сентября. Оба мальчика находятся при Саше. Я очень сочувствую мысли, которую подал Леве Николай Мекк, отдать Митю и Володю в Училище правоведения. Если они опять будут вести в Киеве безумно-суетны и образ жизни, то для мальчиков это отзовётся очень скверна. Митя не выдержал переэкзаменовки и из гимназии взят, и теперь самое лучшее было бы решиться их отдать в училище. Представь себе, что Николай Мекк безумно влюблён в Анну. Бедная Н[адеждаl Ф[иларетовна] очень хлопотала, чтобы он влюбился в неё, а теперь и сама не рада, — боится, что он курса не окончит как следует. Модест, кажется, на пути к благополучному исходу из своих щекотливых отношений к Алине. Он предъявил ей свои условия мира, из коих главное то, что жить он хочет отдельно и где угодно, — и Алина сдалась сразу. Вообще, узнав, что Модест советовался с адвокатом Герке и что теперь твёрдо знает сущность своих прав на Колю, — она сделалась очень уступчива и смиренна. Модест очень недоволен опекуном Филипповым, — говорит, что он тряпка. Скоро должны вернуться Лева с Таней. Я со страхом ожидаю этого; боюсь, что появление Тани внесёт смуту в наш спокойный образ жизни. Снимок с папашиной печатки я тебе послал: получил ли ты его? Сейчас ездил с Анной к Сталю. По-моему, он очень плох, и, судя по лицу его, я склонен думать, что он не выздоровеет. Как-то Ваш переезд совершается? С нетерпением жду письма от тебя. Целую обоих.

Kamenka 29 August Dear Tolichka! I myself am living fairly well. I'm working so hard that I sometimes feel tired, but I have the opportunity to walk at certain times, and a generally carefree way of life is sparing me from fatigue. The weather is dry (as always when I'm in Kamenka), and the dust spoils the pleasure of walking. In the evening Kolya Peresleni appears, and we play vint together. For now, the news from Sasha] and Vera is all very pleasant. Vera is due to give birth at the beginning of September. Both the boys are with Sasha. I have much sympathy for the idea which Nikolay Meck put to Lyova, to send Mita and Volodya to the School of Jurisprudence. If they lead a madly hectic life again in Kiev, it will have a very bad effect on the boys. Mitya failed the re-examination and was expelled, and now the best thing would be to decide to send them to the School. Just imagine that Nikolay Meck is madly in love with Anna. Poor Nadezhda Filaretovna went to great pains to have him fall in love with her, and now she herself is not happy — she's afraid that he won't finish the course properly. Modest seems to be on the way to a happy outcome to his ticklish relations with Alina. He presented her with his peace terms, the most important being that he wants to live separately and wherever he pleases — and Alina gave in immediately. Generally, having learned that Modest had consulted with the lawyer Gerke, and that he now firmly knows the basis for his rights to Kolya, she has become very compliant and meek. Modest is very dissatisfied with the trustee Filippov, saying that he's a milksop. Lyova and Tanya should be back soon. I'm awaiting this with trepidation; I'm afraid that Tanya's appearance will disrupt our peaceful way of life. I sent you a picture of Papasha's ring; did you receive it? I just went with Anna to see Stahl. In my opinion, he is very poorly and, judging from his appearance, I'm inclined to think that he won't recover. Have you completed your move?
