Каменка 23 апр[еля] 1879 Сегодня день именин сестры, — но мы проводим его довольно грустно. Она серьёзно нездорова. В Киеве с ней случился жестокий нервный припадок с обмороками, обмираниями, страшною болью в обеих ногах и т. п. Теперь она очень слаба, не спит, мучится постоянною болью ног, и только наркотизация посредством морфина успокаивает её. Мы все единогласно решили, что её следует заставить лечиться серьёзно во что бы то ни стало. А главное — нужно ехать. Я по собственным нервным страданиям знаю, до чего важно в таком положении спокойствие. Здесь при большом семействе и при довольно тесном помещении оно невозможно. Она сама начинает понимать, что требуется на время удалиться, и хотя поездка в Карлсбад её пугает, но она сегодня с удовольствием говорила о Кpыме. Может быть, мы уговорим её отправиться хоть туда недель на шесть. Все это разъяснится и разрешится, когда она несколько поправится, а покамест необходимо добиться, чтоб она, наконец, начала спать здоровым и естественным сном. Теперь, милый друг, отвечу Вам на Ваши вопросы о каменском хозяйстве 1) В прежнее время удобрение клали прямо под свекловицу, теперь уже несколько лет сряду поступают так же, как у Вас, т. е. кладут его под пшеницу, потом год поле отдыхает, и тогда уже сеется свекловица. 2) Относительно минерального тука зять говорит, что по истечении трёхлетнего опыта над ним он может сказать положительно только то, что тук способствует улучшению качества пшеницы. Он воздерживается покамест от окончательного суждения о достоинстве этого удобрения. 3) Порядок севооборота в каменском хозяйстве следующий: 1-ый год — пар с навозом, 2-ой — пшеница, 3-ий — пар, 4-ый — свекловица. 5-ый — яровой хлеб, 6-ой — пар без навоза, 7-ой — рожь, 8-й — яровой хлеб и трава однолетняя. Кроме того, на отдельных полях сеются многолетние травы, преимущественно эспарцет и люцерна. Лев Вас[ильевич] называет свой севооборот 8-польным, — следовательно, в этом отношении порядок здесь не такой, как у Вас. Боже мой! чего бы я ни сделал, чтобы Ваш новый управляющий оказался дельным и знающим человеком! Говорят, что Браилов соответствует как нельзя более всем требованиям самой лучшей доходности. Сегодня наступил здесь значительный холод, и есть основание опасаться сегодняшней ночью мороза. Это было бы ужасно! Все фруктовые деревья теперь в цвету, — все это погибнет, если ртуть опустится ниже нуля. Я кончил сюиту. Завтра посылаю её в Москву. В течение лета она будет напечатана. Kamenka 23 April 1879 Today is my sister's name day — but we are spending it rather miserably. She is seriously unwell. In Kiev she suffered a severe nervous breakdown, including dizziness, fainting spells, terrible pain in both legs, and so on. Now she is very week, not sleeping, suffering from constant leg pain, and only morphine anaesthesia can soothe her. We all unanimously decided that she must be compelled to have serious treatment, no matter the cost. And most importantly — she needs to leave. I know from my own nervous struggles how important peace and quiet is in such a situation. Here, with a large family and in rather cramped quarters, this is impossible. She herself is beginning to understand that she needs to leave for a while, and although the journey to Carlsbad alarms her, today she spoke with pleasure about Crimea. Perhaps we can persuade her to go there for at least six weeks. All of this will be clarified and settled when she recovers somewhat, but for the time being it is essential to ensure that she finally starts to have sleep healthily and naturally. Now, dear friend, I shall answer your questions about the farm at Kamenka. 1) In the past, fertiliser was put directly beneath the beetroot, but for several years in a row now they have been doing as you do, i.e. putting it under wheat, then the field lies fallow for a year, and then the beetroot is sown. 2) Regarding mineral fertiliser, my brother-in-law says that after three years' experience of using it, he can only say positively that this fertiliser helps to improve the quality of the wheat. He is currently refraining from making a definitive judgement on the merits of this fertiliser. 3) The order for crop rotation on the farm at Kamenka is as follows: 1st year — fallow with manure, 2nd — wheat, 3rd — fallow, 4th — beetroot. 5th — spring grain, 6th — fallow without manure, 7th — rye, 8th — spring grain and perennial grass. Besides this, perennial grasses, mainly sainfoin and alfafa, are sown in some fields. Lev Vasilyevich calls this an 8-field crop rotation, therefore the order here differs from yours in some respect. My God, what I would not to do ensure that your new manager turns out to be a capable and knowledgeable person! They say that Brailov could not be in a better position to be highly profitable. A significant cold has set in here today, and there is reason to fear a frost tonight. That would be awful! All the fruit trees are now in bloom — if the mercury falls below zero they shall all perish. I have finished the suite. Tomorrow I am sending it to Moscow. It will be printed during the summer.
