25 July 1888 Tolichka, golubchik, don't be angry that I'm restricting myself to brief notes. I'm so tired from work that I absolutely cannot write long letters. After all, this summer I need to finish the symphony [1], the overture to Hamlet, and also to orchestrate Laroche's overture. I've been promising him that for ages. Laroche and his wife are currently my guests; their situation is awful. Plevako [2] has tied them up in knots, they have no money, nor any hope of extricating themselves. Still, they are bearing up. The weather this last ten days was glorious, and I enjoyed it terribly; now it's raining incessantly again. I'm dreaming of coming to see you in the autumn. I'm waiting for Modest and Kolya. In general all is well with them, thank God. I have made one change at home: Vasily the cook has left (at his own request), and I've taken on a new one, with whom I'm very pleased. I kiss you! Not a word from Panya. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky |
