Podushkino 19 August 1883 Dear friend Eduard Frantsevich!
I don't know whether this letter will still catch you in Petersburg, and I'm just writing a few words regarding Pryanishnikov, who has expressed a desire that I should assign him to the role of Mazepa. Last June, I sent the Directorate the allocation of roles in which the part of Mazepa was assigned to Melnikov, because I didn't then know that Pryanishnikov would be in the company, Now, of course, I'm happily prepared to tell the directorate that I want to give the part of Mazepa to Pryanishnikov instead of Melnikov. Do you think it conceivable that Melnikov could sing in the same opera with Pryanishnikov? If so,then I want no-one else but Melnikov to take the role of Kochubey. I have already written and will write again to the Directorate that I am wholly reliant on you concerning the allocation of roles. If my desire for Melnikov to sing the role of Kochubey proves feasible, then I would earnestly request you accept Stravinsky for the minor role of Orlik. This may be minor, but it requires a fine artist. Your sincerely respectful and warmly affectionate, P. Tchaikovsky If you write, address it to Jurgenson. |
