Kamenka
24 April

Dear, good friend!

Our Kamenka has come alive: out Petersburg residents arrived the day before yesterday. And the peculiar thing is that although everyone is here, there is still a feeling of emptiness. I attribute this to the absence of the three eldest daughters. All three of them, including Tanya, have been away before, yet nevertheless one cannot become accustomed to their absence, and there always seems to be a sense of waiting for everything to be as it was. Young girls, with their virginal charm and purity, are one of the greatest delights of family life; they brighten up the everyday family atmosphere wonderfully, and without them, no matter how great the well-being, the warmest element of a happy family life is missing. Of course, one cannot lament Tanya's absence, because for a long while now she has brought nothing but grief to the family, but there was a time when, with her beauty, intelligence and talent, brought joy and delight. And as for Vera and Anna, there is nothing to say, except that their absence is profoundly felt. As for Tasya, then I am terribly afraid for that girl, for fear that she will become like her older sister.

27 April

I have begun a new composition in the form of a suite. This form greatly appeals to me, since it does not constrain me in the least, nor require submission to any traditions or rules. This suite will be in five movements, the last of which is variations.

The drought continues; the vegetation is coming along feebly, and the beet plantations that had hitherto produced excellent shoots are now plagued by grey beetles, the scourge of the local farms. If the drought continues, the harvest will be very poor. Lev Vasilyevich has gone to look at an estate, if I am not mistaken, for Kolya (your son). My brother Anatoly also has dreams of buying an estate in this very same locality. I can readily believe that this is a good capital investment, but, from the point of view of the pleasantness of life, I would not advise anyone to choose Kiev province for the acquisition of real estate — surely one can only find a decent corner on the banks of the Dnieper.

And our exchange rate, despite the success of the loan subscription, is falling. Since the whole purpose of the loan was precisely to raise the exchange rate then, as Katkov rightly demonstrates, our Ministry of Finance has committed another major error.

Two days ago I turned 44 years old.

Keep well, my dear, good, invaluable friend!

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
