Notes and References
- ↑ The first performance of Ostrovsky's fairy-tale play The Snow Maiden with incidental music by Tchaikovsky had taken place the previous evening, on 11/23 May 1873, at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre, with Nikolay Rubinstein conducting. Tchaikovsky had been commissioned to write the music for this play largely at the initiative of Vladimir Begichev, director of the Imperial Theatres in Moscow .
