A one-bar musical phrase (TH 251) [1] was noted down by Tchaikovsky on a printed copy of Tatyana Shchepkina-Kupernik's drama Eternity in an Instant (Вечность в мгновении), extracted from the Moscow journal Artist [2]. The date of the sketch and the nature of the work for which it may have been intended have not been established, but it could not have been earlier than 1892, when the drama was first published.
