| Процедура сочинения балетной музыки следующая. Избирается сюжет, разрабатывается театральной администрацией сообразна с её средствами программа; затем балетмейстер составляет подробнейший проект сцен и танцев, причём указывается в точности не только ритм и характер музыки, но и самое ''число тактов''. Только тогда композитор приступает к сочинению музыки. Итак, если Вам желательно, чтобы балет «''Буря''» был поставлен, напр[имер], на императорской петербургской сцене, то Вам следует обратиться к директору Всеволожскому и балетмейстеру ''Петипа''. Не невозможно, что, в случае принятия Вашей программы, мне предложат написать к ней музыку, хотя я нахожу, что сюжет «''Бури''» слишком грандиозен и глубок для балета. Не могу себе представить ''Миранду и Фердинанда'', делающими батманы, антраша и т. п. Программу балета вместе с сим возвращаю.

| The procedure for composing ballet music is as follows <ref name="note1"/>. A subject is selected, developed by the theatre administration in accordance with the confines of its programme; then the balletmaster compiles a detailed scheme of scenes and dances, not merely indicating precisely the rhythm and character of the music, but specifically the ''number of bars''. Only then does the composer set about composing the music. Therefore, if you wish the ballet "''The Tempest''" to be produced, for example, on the [[Petersburg]] imperial stage, then you should approach the director [[Vsevolozhsky]] and balletmaster ''[[Petipa]]''. It is not impossible that, in the event that your proposal is accepted, that I will be proposed to write the music for it, although I consider that the subjeect of "''The Tempest''" is much too grandiose and profound for the ballet. I cannot myself imagine ''Miranda and Ferdinand'' represented by battement, entrechat, etc. I am returning the ballet programme herewith.
