  1. Tchaikovsky was replying to a telegram from Sergey Taneyev of 11/23 May 1888, inviting him to a Moscow Conservatory production of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. Unfortunately the performance had to be cancelled, due to the illness of the soprano Nadezhda Nikolayevna Milanova (b. 1864).
