1st August Frolovskoye village Thank you for the letter, dear Volodya, and for the delightful song [1]. It's remarkable that, despite the modern words, the melody of the song is exactly as it was in ancient times. The tonality is difficult to discern, but it's most likely Phrygian. I was very touched by Bazalita's [2] postscript; please give her the firmest possible kiss from me. I hope we'll see each other in the autumn. I'm working terribly, because of the need to finish the full score of the symphony as quickly as possible. I'll probably go for a short stay at Kamenka soon. I don't know whether this letter will catch you in Moscow, and so I won't expatiate. Laroche and his wife are staying with me. Goodbye, until we meet, I embrace you. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky |
