| Начинаю письмо двумя просьбами. Котек давно уже просил меня о следующих двух вещах: 1) какая-то певица Шульцен-Астен желает иметь мою карточку с моей надписью, а 2) скрипач ''де Ана'' желает иметь мой концерт. И то и другое я давно обещал, давно пишу Котеку, что я к тебе уже обращался с этими просьбами, и давно он в каждом письме изъявляет удивление насчёт твоего невнимания к моим убедительным просьбам. Наконец сегодня совесть моя заговорила, и я признался, что до сих пор ни разу ни о том, ни о другом не писал тебе. Итак, душа моя, 1) потрудись послать к Дьяговченке купить у него мою карточку, 2) вели приказчику уложить экземпляр моего концерта и пошли то и другое в Берлин на имя Котека по его адресу или через Бока. Надпись на карточке я поручил сделать Котеку, в том предположении, что г[оспо]жа Шульцен-Астен не может быть знакома с моим чудным почерком. Пожалуйста, голубчик, исполни обе просьбы.

| Ты, может быть, думаешь, что я тебе сообщу что-нибудь насчёт моих парижских впечатлений. «Ошибся, друг!» — как говорит Кашкин, когда, выпивши, он от прозы переходит к стихам. Не сообщу, — ибо я ещё не осмотрелся, приехавши только сегодня утром. Покамест я только сознаю в душе своей невыразимое сожаление о моей чудной и покойной жизни в ''Clarens''. Увидим, что будет завтра. Что касается ''Clarens'' то мой отъезд произвёл целую драму. Хозяйка плакала, хозяин неистово трепал меня за руку, горничная девушка (необыкновенно милое существо) плакала, и я тоже прослезился. Уверяю тебя, что нигде и никогда за границей я не чувствовал себя так хорошо, как там. Если обстоятельства позволят и если не произойдёт никакого крутого переворота в моей жизни, то я намерен от ныне там проводить большую часть зимы.

| I begin my letter with two requests. For quite a while [[Kotek]] has been asking me for the following two items: 1) some singer, Schulzen-Asten, wishes to have my card with my inscription, and 2) the violinist ''de Ana'' wishes to have my [[Violin Concerto|concerto]]. I promised both of these ages ago, and wrote to [[Kotek]] ages ago that I had already approached you with these requests, and for ages now in each letter he has been expressing his surprise concerning your inattentiveness towards my earnest requests. Finally, today, my conscience piped up, and I confessed that until now I hadn't written to you at all about one or the other. Therefore, my dear chap: 1) kindly send off to Dyagovchenko to purchase my card from him; 2) instruct an employee to package a copy of my concerto, and send both to [[Berlin]] under [[Kotek]]'s name, or to his address through [[Bock]]. I've entrusted [[Kotek]] to write the inscription on the card, on the assumption that Mrs Schulzen-Asten may not be familiar with my wonderful penmanship. Please, golubchik, fulfil both requests.

| You may, perhaps, be thinking that I will be telling you something regarding my impressions of [[Paris]]. "Wrong, friend!" — as [[Kashkin]] says when, intoxicated, he passes from prose to poetry. I shall not tell you — because I still haven't looked around, having only arrived this morning. For the moment I only sense in my heart inexpressible regret for my wonderful and peaceful life in ''[[Clarens]]''. Let us see what tomorrow brings. Regarding ''[[Clarens]]'', my departure caused a whole drama. The manageress cried, the manager frantically shook out my hand, the parlour maid (an exceptionally sweet creature) cried, and I also shed a tear. I assure you that nowhere and never abroad have I felt so good as there. If circumstances permit and if no sudden upheavals occur in my life, then I intend henceforth to spend the majority of the winter there.
