Более ленивых корреспондентов, как вы, кажется, ещё никогда не бывало. Я более месяца не имею о вас никаких известий и только оттого не беспокоюсь, что если бы у вас что было неблагополучно, то я, конечно, узнал бы из Петербурга. Сегодня уезжаю в Россию. Провёл в Риме три недели, и провёл их весьма хорошо, но только оттого, что невдалеке была перспектива ехать скоро домой. Во всяком случае, Рим для меня бесконечно приятнее и симпатичнее, чем Флоренция. Приехал я в Рим, ещё не вполне оправившись от флорентинской болезни, похуделый, бледный. Здесь удивительно поправился. Алексеи Голицын и Палены были поражены моей худобой, когда я сюда приехал, но тот же Алексей Голицын, уезжавший в Неаполь и вернувшийся на днях, был поражён быстротой, с которой я поправился. Палены были слишком любезны, чтобы я совсем пренебрёг ими. Я даже провожал их, когда они уезжали. Алексей Голицын от них узнал, что я здесь. Это единственные лица, с коими я здесь виделся; от всех других отбояривался самым решительным образом. Однако ж пришлось быть на одном квартетном утре, где исполнялся мой квартет. Я инструментовал здесь половину оперы. Положим, что нужно ещё инструментовать другую половину, сделать корректуру клавираусцуга, так что работы ещё много. Но, во всяком случае, в августе я в Тифлисе и остаюсь до ноября. В самом конце месяца буду во Фроловском (рожденье своё отпраздную в Петербурге) и там буду ожидать письма от тебя или о тебе. Rome 29/17 April 1890 I don't think there have ever been lazier correspondents than you. It's over a month since I had any news about you, and the only reason I'm not worried is that if something bad had happened to you, then of course I would have found out from Petersburg. Today I'm leaving for Russia. I've spent three weeks in Rome, and spent them very well, but only because the prospect of going home soon wasn't far off. In any case, Rome is infinitely more pleasant and more sympathetic to me than Florence. I came to Rome thin and pale, not yet fully recovered from my Florence illness. I've made an astonishing recovery here. Aleksey Golitsyn and the Pahlens were astounded at how thin I was when I arrived here, but the same Aleksey Golitsyn, who went off to Naples and came back the other day, was amazed at the speed with which I recovered. The Pahlens were too courteous for me to neglect them altogether. I even saw them off when they left. Aleksey Golitsyn learned from them that I was here. These are the only people I've seen here; I avoided everyone else in the most decisive fashion. However, I had to go to one quartet matinée where my quartet was performed. I've orchestrated half of the opera here. Let's say that the other half still needs to be orchestrated, and the proofs of piano reduction have to be done, so there's still a lot of work to do. But, in any case, I'll be in Tiflis in August and staying until November. At the very end of the month I'll be at Frolovskoye (I'll be celebrating my birthday in Petersburg), and there I'll be expecting a letter from you or about you.
