3 March Saint Petersburg Dear Aleksandr Vasilyevich!
I have a big request of you. Do you remember one day in Kiev, during my last visit [1], you demonstrated to the director, while I and others were present, one particular flute effect, which I liked awfully much? I think you called it by an Italian name, something along the lines of flutrando, flustando, or some sort of word containing the letters t, r, l. I very much want to employ this effect in my new ballet [2]. Therefore I would kindly ask you to reply right away to the following questions: 1) The title, terminology of this thing? 2) How is it produced? (If I'm not mistaken, you said that it's with an elongated letter r, but what of the fingering? Is it a chromatic scale? Or diatonic?) 3) Can two or three flutes be made to play it at once, in ranges of thirds or sixths, like this: Teach me generally about this delightful effect, and write some notes with examples of it. Besides this, write to me if you are acquainted with the alto flute; does it have a good tone, and how should it be notated?? Please reply to all this to the town of Klin, Moscow province, if possible, immediately [3]. A thousand greetings to your dear wife, and to all my Kiev friends in general. I embrace you heartily, P. Tchaikovsky |
