Питер 2 мая Милый Модя! Третий день уже здесь. Кончились мои московские терзания дирижированием «Онегина», причём были, конечно, овации. Кстати, о Москве. Был я неделю назад с Паней на «Симфонии», превосходно исполненной в Малом театре. Ильинский очарователен, особенно в 5-ом акте. Да! Именно в 5-ом. Теперь я убедился, что ты совершенно напрасно изменил конец Симфонии», и если я был в числе советчиков, — раскаиваюсь. Ермолова понравилась мне в этой роли не особенно. Второстепенные исполнители великолепны. Здесь вижусь с театральными, и ежедневно идут беседы о «Иоланте» и её будущих исполнителях. Приглашена Скомпская. Боб сейчас пошёл на экзамен. Очень боится. Курьёзную республику нашёл я на вашей квартире. С моим приездом водворился некоторый порядок, — но как они до меня жили, просто непостижимо. Никто о хозяйстве не заботился, и я удивляюсь ещё, что они все (в том числе и живущая здесь Eastwood) не умерли с голода. Дорогой из Москвы сюда останавливался на несколько часов в Клину, чтобы крестить Георгия Алексеевича Софронова, родившегося 23 апр[еля]. Мальчик славный, крепкий и здоровый. Я уже в Клину. Алексей превосходно устроил моё помещение. Такой роскошной комнаты у меня ещё никогда не было. В Москве давно уже лето, все зелено. Здесь холод и ни одного листика. Вчера видел грандиозный вынос тела Грессера. Еду послезавтра домой на 3 недели. Количке напишу отдельно завтра. П. Чайковский Коля! Я проеду прямо с Зилоти!!
