Salin was a contemporary of Tchaikovsky at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied under Henryk Wieniawski. Salin went on to organise and participate in many quartet concerts for the Russian Musical Society. In 1876, he moved to Saratov to teach violin and viola classes, before joining the faculty of the Moscow Conservatory (1885–93).
