Ulyanovsk (Ульяновск) is a Russian city on the Volga River around 900 km south-east of Moscow, and is the the administrative centre of Ulyanovsk oblast (Ульяновская область).
During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was known as Simbirsk (Симбирск), and was the centre of the Simbirsk district (Симбирский уезд), and Simbirsk province (Симбирская губерния) in the Russian Empire.

Tchaikovsky visited Simbirsk on 22 May/3 June 1887, during his steamship journey down the Volga river.
