Salin was a contemporary of Tchaikovsky at the [[Saint Petersburg]] Conservatory, where he studied under Henryk Wieniawski. Salin went on to organise and participate in many quartet concerts for the Russian Musical Society. In 1876 he moved to [[Saratov]] to teach violin and viola classes, before joining the faculty of the [[Moscow]] Conservatory (1885–93).
