Tsarskoye Selo
Pushkin (Пушкин) is a Russian town in the federal district of Saint Petersburg, and approximately 25 kilometres south of that city.
During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was known as Tsarskoye Selo (Царское село), or the Tsar's Village, and was the administrative centre of the Tsarskoye Selo district (Царскосельский уезд) of the Saint Petersburg province (Санкт-Петербургская губерния) of the Russian Empire.
Between 1917 and 1937 the town was first known as Soldier's Village (Солдатское село) and then as Children's Village (Детское село).
Tchaikovsky in Tsarskoye Selo
Tchaikovsky visited Tsarskoye Selo as part of a six-day trip around the northern Baltic (from 26 July/7 August to 1/13 August 1890). "I've been to Tsarskoye, to Peterhof, to Terijoki (Finland) with Menter, to Ozerki, and to Arkady, and generally spent a very pleasant time" [1].
