14 мая Модя! Насчёт твоих переговоров с Юргенсоном скажу, что нет сомнения, что он согласится на твоё желание получить за либретто столько же, сколько Шпажинский. Насчёт перевода Улыбышева попрошу тебя внимательно перечесть и исправить всякие стилистические недосмотры. В местах, где ты насчёт музыкальной техники встретишь сомнения, поставь кресты. Я эти места просмотрю, если что нужно исправить, исправлю и отдам в печать. Ничего особенного не произошло. Ходил однажды пешком в Майданово и провёл несколько очень приятных часов с Новичихой. От времени до времени я очень люблю с ней похохотать. У неё все занято, и Майданово в моде, ибо Захарьин по её просьбе рекомендует её дачи, говоря, что там очень-хорош воздух. Приезжали ко мне однажды гости: Кашкин, Зилоти и Пётр Иванович. Как водится, происходило пьянство. Зилоти, занимающийся теперь корректурой «Пиковой дамы», восхищается ею. Впрочем, он всегда моими сочинениями всохищается. Работа подвигается не особенно быстро, ибо то, что я теперь инструментую (4 и 5-я картины), требуют огромного внимания и старания. Видел я сегодня во сне Боба, и вследствие этого сна у меня непреодолимое желание его видеть. Может быть, в самом конце мая я приеду, чтоб повидать его, а то ведь он проскользнёт. Пожалуйста, уведомь насчёт экзаменов Коли и Боба. Что бы Мане ко мне приехать? Обнимаю. П. Чайковский Прости за хлопоты о моем ящике из Флоренции.

14 May Modya! Regarding your negotiations with Jurgenson, I'll say that he will undoubtedly agree to your wish to receive the same amount for the libretto as Shpazhinsky. Regarding the translation of Ulybyshev, I urge you to read it carefully and to correct any stylistic oversights. Put crosses in places where you're unsure about the musical technicalities. I'll review these places, and if anything needs correcting, I'll correct it, and send off it to be printed. Nothing in particular has happened. On one occasion I went on foot to Maydanovo and spent several pleasant hours with Novichika. I very much like to laugh with her from time to time. She is fully occupied, and Maydanovo is in fashion, because Zakharin, at her request, recommends her dachas, saying that the air there is very good. One day I had guests come to see me: Kashkin, Ziloti and Pyotr Ivanovich. As usual, there was drunkenness. Ziloti, who is currently proofreading "The Queen of Spades" is delighted by it. However, he's always delighted by my compositions. The work isn't progressing especially quickly, because what I'm now scoring (the 4th and 5th scenes) requires enormous attention and effort.
