с[ело] Майданово 11 июня Баташа! По-моему, Вы поступаете неправильно, отдавая мне вторую, а не третью корректуру. Крупных перемен, пропусков быть не может, ибо и я был внимателен, вкладывая приложения, и помощник мой (статский советник Александр Иванович Баталин) был внимателен, и, наконец, корректор, делавший первую корректуру (преподаватель скрипичной игры и теории гармонии по превосходному руководству многоуважаемого П. И. Чайковского А. И. Хубертов), был тоже внимателен, по крайней [мере], так я предполагаю, ибо это бездарный и пустой человек, — но трудолюбивый. Все это я пишу Вам потому, что, отдавая мне вторую корректуру, Вы и меня суетите и себя задерживаете. По-моему, Вы должны сделать обе первые корректуры, уехать в Карлсбад и третью свалить уже на меня. Если бы, в крайнем случае, и нашлись какие-нибудь места, которые я пожелал бы радикально изменить, — то могу беспрепятственно сделать четвертую корректуру. Итак, г. статский советник (он же и скрипичный преподаватель А. И. Хубертов), обдумайте все это и решите сделать по-моему. Я убедился, что, ввиду отъезда всех директоров, мне едва ли возможно будет устроить, чтобы Альбертович получил теперь вперёд деньги. Итак, ради Бога, займите где хотите (если нужно, под моим поручительством) и поезжайте в Карлсбад и совершенно будьте уверены в том, что условие, предъявленное Альбертовичем, будет исполнено. Maydanovo village 11 June Batasha! In my opinion you are acting incorrectly by giving me the second, rather than the third proofs. There can be no major changes or omissions, because I was diligent when inserting the appendices, and my assistant (State Councilor Aleksandr Ivanovich Batalin) was also diligent, and, finally, the reader of the first proofs (A. I. Khubertov, a tutor of violin playing and in the theory of harmony under the excellent guidance of the most respected P. I. Tchaikovsky), was also diligent, at least I assume so, for he is a mediocre and empty fellow — but a hard-working one. I am writing all this to you because, in giving me the second proofs, you are a hindrance to me and delaying yourself. In my opinion, you should do both the first two proofs, go off to Carlsbad, and pin the third one on me. If, in an extreme case, I find some places that I decide to radically alter, then I can do the fourth proofs without any difficulty. Therefore, Mr State Councillor (alias the violin tutor A. I. Khubertov), kindly consider all this, and decide to do it my way. I have become convinced that, in view of all the directors leaving, it would hardly be possible for me now to arrange for Albertovich to receive payment in advance. So for God's sake, borrow where you want (if necessary, under my guarantee), and go to Carlsbad, and be absolutely sure that the terms stipulated by Albertovich shall be fulfilled. Alekseyev already know about this, and said that at the next meeting of the directorate he would support my proposal to double the fee.
