13 October 1891 There's no reason whatsoever to feel guilty or anything of the sort [1]. I didn't write to you, and nor did you write to me! Why should you be required to fuss over me any more than I over you? Indeed, there's no need for fussing at all. I would not want you to write to me only for the sake of duty, or moreover, boredom, because I myself hate letters. I would rather receive one letter from you a year, written because you need to express something, than 50 letters written only out of respect for your grey-haired uncle. My God, Bobochka, there have always been a thousand reasons why I could not live permanently in Petersburg. No! That's it! Next year I shall live in Petersburg so that I can see you all the time. Write to me as soon as you can 2 words about how Sanya's operation went. Poor Sanya! I am terribly sorry and commiserate with him. I kiss you, my joy. Yours P. T. "The Fruits of Enlightenment" is a farce with some decent scenes, but it's unworthy of the genius of Tolstoy [2]. |
