Dear friend!

Since I've not yet received the music paper you sent me, in the meantime I've finished the first act and have started on the full score of the second, and I'll set about on the piano arrangement when I've finished that. I think that in July I'll be delivering you the 2 acts in both the full score and piano reduction. I'm very grateful to you for the offer of money, but I won't make use of it. It's true that I don't have a kopek, and won't have until August — but I don't really need it, and if I happen to find myself impoverished, than I can make do with a small loan from my brother-in-law. I merely ask you to continue to paying the pension to the woman who bears my surname. She, through some mysterious attorney who visits Anatoly, is asking me for an extra 200 rubles, but I intend to quietly evade her; despite the fact that Anatoly meekly gave her an assurance. In general my brother, by virtue of the gentleness of his soul, is not at all suited to mediate between us. Fortunately, he'll be here soon, and I'll set him straight.

I've received a letter from Fitzenhagen, informing me that he's caused a furore with the Variations. So much the better.

I hope you've received the proofs of the symphony? I found no few mistakes. Since I doubt that they will be corrected entirely accurately, it would be most desirable for Messer to do one more proofreading. We've already drawn this out long enough! It can go on a bit longer. The arrangement is splendidly done, but on this occasion I'm not entirely satisfied with the engraving. The bars are grouped too close in places, and not clearly distinguished. However, this relates to the first movement. So far as the dedication is concerned, I'm very glad that you had it moved to its own page.

Whereupon, until we meet, golubchik.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Sorry for the scrappy writing. I'm very rushed.
