Каменка 7 авг[уста] Милый друг! Сейчас я послал на почту в Смелу за посылкой от Мессера. Очень меня это интересует. По рассмотрении тотчас дам тебе ответ. Третий акт я кончил и отдал его для переложения Котеку, который нарочно для этой цели приезжал сюда. Сделал я это ради скорости, но боюсь, что Мессер, может быть, обидится. Четвёртый акт я отдам Мессеру. Надеюсь, что через месяц все будет кончено, т. е. с моей стороны. Сегодня я уезжаю на несколько дней к Модесту, но так как мне неизвестно, сколько я у него пробуду, то попрошу тебя адресовать мне по-прежнему в Каменку. Очень может быть, что в конце августа мы с тобой увидимся, так как по некоторым семейным делам мне придётся съездить в Петербург. Пожалуйста, скажи Мессеру, чтобы он принимался за 2-е действие, ибо хотя я ещё не видел 1-го действия, но не сомневаюсь, что он работал порядочно, а если что и не совсем будет мне нравиться, то ведь я могу исправить и сделать по-своему. Сегодня высылаю тебе корректуру Серенады. Очень, очень сокрушаюсь о Нижегородской неудаче. А может быть, ты ошибаешься? Есть тысяча вещей, о которых нужно мне поговорить с тобой лично, и поэтому я страшно желаю побывать в Москве. Вероятно, работу Мессера я привезу сам вместе с партитурой последнего действия, которую надеюсь к тому времени окончить. Пожалуйста, устрой, чтобы Мессер не обиделся за то, что 3-ий акт я отдал Котеку. Во 1-х, повторяю — это для скорости, во 2-х,-хочу дать бедному Котеку возможность немножко заработать. Но, впрочем, если Мессер хочет, чтобы имя его на клавираусцуге было напечатано, — я на это охотно соглашаюсь. Ты можешь ему сказать, что 3-е действие я сделал сам. Kamenka 7 August Dear friend! I've jut sent off for a parcel from Messer from the Smela post office. I'm very intrigued. After due consideration I'll answer you right away. I finished the third act and gave it to Kotek to arrange; he's come here for this specific purpose. I did this for the sake of speed, but I'm afraid that perhaps Messer will be offended. I'll give the fourth act to Messer. I hope that it will all be finished within a month, i.e. on my part. Today I'm leaving for a few days to see Modest, but since I don't know how long I'll be staying with him, I'll ask you to continue to address me at Kamenka as before. It may very well be that we'll see each other at the end of August, since I have to go to Petersburg for some family business. Please, tell Messer to start on the 2nd act, because even though I haven't seen the 1st act, I have no doubts that he's done a decent job, and if I don't like something then I can always alter it and do it my own way. I'm sending you the proofs of the Serenade today. I'm very, very upset about the failure of Nizhny Novgorod. Or perhaps you are mistaken? There are a thousand things I need to discuss with you in person, and therefore I want terribly to visit Moscow. I'll probably bring Messer's work with my, together with the score of the last act, which I hope to have finished by that time. Please, see to it that Messer is not offended by my giving the 3rd act to Kotek. I repeat that, firstly, this is for speed, and, secondly, I wanted to give poor Kotek the opportunity to earn a little. Anyway, if Messer wants his name to be printed on the piano reduction, I will gladly agree to this. You can tell him that I did the 3rd act myself.
