Rome
28/16 December

My dear friend!

I received your letter two days ago. What can I tell you about Rome? It is a magnificent city, rich in historical memories, possessed of a remarkable climate — but at the same time it is noisy, colourful and dirty. It interests me very little. They say that one needs to live here for a long time in order to fall in love with Rome; we'll see. In the meantime I'm enjoying, firstly, the wonderfully sunny days, and secondly, Modest's company.

I'll tell you the whole truth about the German publishers' advances; they are somewhat flattering to my vanity, but I don't want to have anything to do with them: 1) because I am happy to only do business with you; 2) because I want the Germans to become accustomed to Russian editions; and 3) because they are scoundrels.

You lament that we are becoming old and that we no longer have the fun that once united us in a tight-knit circle. This is still no reason to be gloomy! Indeed, if I'd remained in Moscow, I should have withered away from melancholy. I'm sustained by the nomadic life and frequent changes of surroundings, distracting me from sad thoughts and regrets about the irretrievable past. I have a peculiar attitude towards Moscow: I love her passionately and at the same time loathe her, just as if I were jealous of her for some reason, as if she had been unfaithful to me.

Why hasn't the suite been played yet? Or has it been played, but it went so unnoticed that you didn't write to me about it?

I'm doing absolutely nothing. I'm intending to set about reworking the 2nd symphony, but I haven't found a spark of inclination or inspiration within myself. Rome is hardly a conducive place to work.

Please, golubchik, kindly send the woman with my name an extra 50 rubles for the holidays. I want to try to reward her for the fact that she has quietened down and left both me and my relatives alone; at the same time kindly mention that this is being done solely because of the holidays, so that she doesn't imagine she'll be receiving a hundred every month. Until we meet, my friend.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
