Толя, голубчик! Я в ужасном колебании. Модест и особенно Коля умоляют меня хоть на 2, хоть на 3 дня съездить в Неаполь и уже оттуда ехать в Россию. С одной стороны, мне ужасно хочется увидеть Неаполь, а с другой—боюсь, что ты будешь сердиться за то, что я опоздаю. Но ведь дня 3-4 уж куда не в счёт! Во всяком случае, очень скоро после 1-го марта я буду в Петербурге. Нельзя никакими словами описать, до чего хороша погода и как Рим и вообще Италия становятся для меня привлекательны. Правду говорят, что Рим можно полюбить только поживши в нем. В этом отношении он имеет много общего с Москвой. Впрочем теперь я восхищаюсь не столько Римом, сколько великолепной весенней погодой. С трепетом думаю о том, что мне ещё придётся застать зиму и слякоть. Здесь ходят невероятные слухи об ужасах, готовящихся к завтрашнему дню в Петербурге. Хотя ум мой говорит мне, что все это страшно преувеличено и невозможно, но душа моя в некоторой тревоге. Буду с замиранием сердца ожидать известий из газет. Над[ежда] Филар[етовна] немножко верит во все это и поехала в Петербург, чтобы провести 19 февраля вместе с 4 сыновьями. Завтра или послезавтра я тебе напишу окончательно еду в Неаполь или нет: но если и поеду, то останусь там не более 2-х–3-х дней. Сейчас был в Риме проездом в Париж из Неаполя Кондратьев. Tolya, golubchik! I'm in a terrible dilemma. Modest and especially Kolya are begging me to go to Naples for at least 2, perhaps 3 days, and to go from there to Russia. On the one hand, I terribly want to see Naples, but on the other, I'm afraid that you'll be angry with me for being late. But does 3 or 4 days really count? Whatever happens, I'll be in Petersburg very soon after 1st March. There are no words to describe how good the weather is and how alluring Rome and Italy in general have become to me. It's true what they say that you can only love Rome after living in it. In this respect it has much in common with Moscow. Anyway, now I'm not so much enthralled by Rome as by the magnificent spring weather. I'm thinking with trepidation about the winter and slush that I'll still have to endure. There are incredible rumours here about the horrors being prepared for tomorrow in Petersburg. Although my mind tells me that this is all awfully exaggerated and impossible, my mood is somewhat uneasy. I'll wait with bated breath for news from the papers. Nadezhda Filaretovna believes this somewhat, and has gone to Petersburg to spend 19 February together with her 4 sons. Tomorrow or the day after I'll write to you definitively whether I'm going to Naples or not: but even if I go, then I'll stay there no more than 2 or 3 days.
