Pyotr Ivanovich! Today I'm sending you: 1) the "Italian Capriccio" a) in the form of a full score, and b) in the form of an arrangment, and 2) proofs of the 1st and 2nd acts of "The Maid". Please, golubchik, give instructions that every one of my amendments must be carefully made; once all this is done, then kindly send me the new printing together with the old one, containing my markings, so that I can ensure that all the mistakes have been corrected. I forewarn you that I will not entrust anyone to do this work, and, in short, it is absolutely essential for me to do one more proofreading myself. As for the 3rd and 4th acts, I'm waiting for them impatiently, and will give you warning that there will be fewer amendments to them, because the arrangements of these acts were done by people, and not by a blockhead. Note the difference in the number of corrections in Act 2 between the ending, which I did, and the beginning, which was done by the blockhead. However, it's not for me to complain. Who's fault was it that I was too lazy and trusted the blockhead? Not yours at all, but mine. I played through the arrangement of the "Capriccio" with my brother Modest, and I can guarantee that even Taneyev would not have made it — I won't say better — but simpler, and more convenient to perform. I'll write to him tomorrow and ask him to forgive me for the misunderstanding.

Until we meet, my dear chap!

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
