Golubchik Anatosha!

I had a magnificent ride thanks to Niks, but I was sad and homesick the whole way. And I was so sad to part with you, my dears, and it was unpleasant for me to have cheated Nápravník, and I was tormented by the imaginary failure of the opera (how stupid that is), and thoughts about various situations involving you, Modest, Sasha, Tanya and Alyosha, who I was pining for every moment; well, in short, only unpleasant thoughts came into my head. It felt in general as though I'd committed some sort of criminal offence and had fled from Russia. Meanwhile, the further south I went, the more that spring was in the air, and I've found wonderful spring weather here. I'm writing this letter to you with the window open. I stopped off at the Goldenes Lamm, had a magnificent dinner, and set off at once for the opera. They gave Weber's "Oberon". What a divine production! It was funny to recall the Mariinsky Theatre. The music is a little tedious, but there are some lovely things. I didn't stay until the end, and came home; I'm writing to you and Modya and drinking tea. On the journey I read a dispatch from Petersburg in the Neue Freie Presse that my opera was given with huge success, but that it was, nevertheless, bad, boring and monotonous.

The curse is already starting to haunt me!

I'll stay here all day tomorrow, and the day after at 7 o'clock in the morning I'll probably go directly to Rome. I would leave tomorrow, but I need to do some hasty proofreading and to write a few more letters.

Please, golubchik, write to me as soon as possible 1) about your relations with Nadya, and 2) about Alyosha. Remember the address: Roma, Hôtel Costanzi. I think that tomorrow I'll find my feet and start enjoying being abroad.

I hug you tighter and tighter. Regards to Rubinstein and Jurgenson.
