Рим 22/10 янв[аря] 1882 Толя! Сейчас получил твоё письмо об Шеншине. Это самый наглый, хотя и убелённый сединами, мошенник, который когда-либо существовал. Вот история моего долга Шеншину. В ноябре 1876 г. Ник[олай] Львович достал мне у него 1000 р[ублей], причём я получил только 800, ибо нужно было заплатить за комиссию няньке Шеншина известные проценты (иначе он не давал; предоставляю тебе решить, кто эта нянька) и самому Ник[олаю] Львовичу. Вексель был засвидетельствован у нотариуса, живущего под Моск[овским] трактиром. Весной 1877 г[ода], когда Шеншин был за границей, я ездил с Ник[олаем] Львовичем к его сёстрам уплатить проценты за полгода и 300 р[ублей] из капитала, причём, вместо того чтобы взять с старушек расписку, мы сами её дали, что очень смешило Шеншина, и при свидании в 1878 г[оду] в апреле в Швейцарии он очень этому смеялся. В ноябре 1877 г[оду], не перед нашей поездкой за границу, а при твоём возвращении через Вену, Киев и Москву в Питер, ты заплатил Шеншину то, что он тогда настоятельно потребовал, т. е. часть капитала и проценты вперёд. Весною 1879 года я через Кондратьева передал его сёстрам под их расписку, которая у меня хранится (он был за границей), 200 р[ублей]. Затем память мне немного изменяет; помню, что что-то было уплачено Юргенсоном или кем-то другим, — но что и как, не помню. В прошлом году, когда он, узнав о моем приезде в Москву, потребовал меня к себе, то утверждал, что я должен ему 700 р[ублей]. Я протестовал и припомнил ему все бывшие уплаты, которые, пользуясь моею наивностью, он не отмечал на векселе. Он отрицал все уплаты, кроме части капитала в 300 р[ублей]. Rome 22/10 January 1882 Tolya! I've just received your letter about Shenshin. This is the most shameless, albeit white-haired, swindler to have ever existed. This is the story of my debt to Shenshin. In November 1876, Nikolay Lvovich borrowed 1000 rubles for me from him, but I only received 800, because I had to pay certain percentages for the commission to Shenshin's nanny (he wouldn't give it otherwise; I'll let you decide who this nanny is) and to Nikolay Lvovich himself. The credit note was certified by a notary who lived by a tavern in Moscow. In the spring of 1877, when Shenshin was abroad, I went with Nikolay Lvovich to his sister's to pay the interest for six months and 300 rubles from the capital, and, instead of taking a receipt from the old woman, we gave her one ourselves, which Shenshin found very funny when we met in April 1878 in Switzerland, and he laughed about it a lot.
