Dear friend! Today, according to your advice, I've sent you the proofs of the concertos by parcel post. It was not without trepidation that I handed over this parcel in the post office — I have little faith in the robustness of the wrapping paper protecting the fruit of my labours. With the 11 concertos I've also enclosed the proofs of the Festival Overture, which have been in my possession for more than 3 months!! Entrust the second proofs of this overture to someone else if you wish, but the third must assuredly be in my hands. Regarding the Bortnyansky, I say the following: 1) It's a pity that you didn't enclose the corrections of the first proofs done by Batalina with the reprints. It would have been interesting to know how much she was to blame for the errors I found, and how much Messrs Engravers were responsible for not carrying out her amendments.

2) Batalina did not follow the instructions I wrote with sufficient diligence. I wanted the whole Bortnyansky edition to be distinguished by complete uniformity, such that the methods of presentation were the same, even down to the smallest details. I established many of these methods after sending you the 35 concertos that I reviewed, and I wanted to introduce these into the first proofs. When I was obliged to hand over the 1st proofing, in order to preserve the uniformity I wrote out "instructions", which Batashka has insufficiently adhered to. So, for example, I established that all pronouns relating to God and the Mother of God were to be written with a capital letter, and drew the proofreader's attention to this. Meanwhile, for the most part the small letters remain. I established that all notes relating to one syllable are to be connected not by many ligatures, but by one, i.e.

1939 ex1.jpg

but this has not been paid attention to either. I wanted to mark all this now — but, after due consideration, I've left it as it is, because if I wanted to do all of this, then the proofs would not have been ready before a week and a half, and then you would be delayed — and any delay seems all the more unpleasant for you. Commas and other punctuation marks have also not been marked to with particular diligence. While it's true that all these are little things that no-one will pay attention to, it's nice when even the little things are taken into account. Anyway, it is important to state honestly: with the exception of the first issue, everything else is unimportant, because there is unlikely to be much variation... But tell Aleksandra Ivanovna all the same not to forget my instructions. When I packaged the 11 concertos today and recalled that you'll be giving the public 8 more lots of this Bortnyansky nonsense, I was somewhat overcome with horror!

You know little about Nápravník. While I may have doubts about Davydov's honesty and sincerity, I have complete trust in Nápravník. "The Maid" isn't being given because Makarov cannot master the role, while Kamenskaya has declined, even though it was (however thoroughly) explained to here that her voice would be ruined by performing a part not written for her.

Isakov actually sent my nieces the "Romeo" overture, which was returned, but I never intended him to write anything, and where did you come by this? I absolutely don't understand. Isakov is a most unsympathetic gentleman to me, and it never even crossed my mind to ingratiate myself with him.

I am greatly encouraged by your efforts for the order. What's to be done? If one lives with wolves then one howls like a wolf. I received and spent the 500 francs ages. I remember thanking you for them in writing; if you haven't received this expression of my gratitude, that means the letter has gone astray.

Did you receive my letter where I wrote to you about Bernard's commission? Please, permit me to hastily scribble on a few sheets of music paper and charge Bernard 600 rubles for them. In 2 weeks I'll be sending you my Trio. I've already rewritten the first movement; I'll start rewriting the second (the andante with variations, of which the 12th and last doubles as the finale) tomorrow.

I've been receiving various gloomy news from Russia recently. This has greatly disturbed my life in Rome, which would have been most pleasant and peaceful without it. Oh, how good it is here! Without seeing it, you cannot imagine. There's only one bad thing — the cost. The money flows like water. It's true that I'm not alone. I'm living with the son of a very wealthy man, dispatched with a tutor and servant to Rome, for his health. And nevertheless, I'm obliged to cover the deficits of the miserly budget set by the wealthy scoundrel of a father. All this is wholly between us, and do not tell Anatoly in particular, because he will blabber, and it will turn out badly.

Until we meet, golubchik! I admire your energy. I was inexpressibly pleased to see from your letter that you have borne your misfortune with such courage. Give Sofya Ivanovna a bow and an expression of my everlasting love for her.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

If it's not too late, could you have someone check the spelling of the text in the 3 issues of the concertos?
