С[анкт] Петербург 25 окт[ября] Толичка, голубчик! Анна и Коля подробно тебе и Пане расскажут, как и что, а я только вкратце (ибо пишу ночью в 3 часа) объясню, почему не поехал в Москву. Я узнал, что у Котека настоящая чахотка и что он с болезненным нетерпением меня ждёт. Пока я его не увижу и не узнаю, насколько он кандидат на тот свет, — не успокоюсь. Поэтому я решился прямо отсюда ехать за границу, в Швейцарию, в Davos, где именно Котекё теперь находится. Не позже начала декабря я вернусь в Москву и проведу там с вами праздники, а что дальше будет, не знаю. Пожалуйста, не сетуйте на меня за то, то невольно должен был обмануть вас. Но бедный Котик! Он совершенно один и, по-видимому, должен скоро умереть! Невозможно не ехать. «Евгений Онегин» имел успех: сборы великолепные. Завтра будет государь, и мне необходимо было остаться до его посещения «Онегина», ибо со всех сторон слышу, как он благосклонен ко мне. Алёшу я отправляю в деревню, а потом он поедет в Москву и будет ожидать моего возвращения. Мне грустно, что я так долго не увижу Вас, — но что же делать! В общем итоге Петербург доставил мне много счастливых минут и сладостное сознание настоящего успеха, но я очень утомлён этой безумно суетливой жизнью и проехаться мне будет полезно. Saint Petersburg 25 October Tolichka, golubchik! Anna and Kolya will tell you and Panya the how and why in detail, but I shall just briefly (because I'm writing at 3 o'clock at night) explain why I didn't go to Moscow. I found out that Kotek truly has consumption, and that he is awaiting me with morbid impatience. Until I see him and find out the extent to which he is a candidate for the next world, I shall not rest. Therefore I've decided to go directly from here abroad, to Davos, in Switzerland, where Kotek is now. I shall return to Moscow no later than the beginning of December, and spend the holidays with you there, but as to what will happen next, I don't know. Please don't blame me for the fact that I had to unwittingly deceive you. But poor Kotik! He is completely alone, and, evidently, at death's door! It is impossible not to go. "Yevgeny Onegin" was a success; the takings were magnificent. The Sovereign will be here tomorrow, and I have to stay until he attends "Onegin", because I hear from all sides how favourably he is disposed towards me. I'm sending Alyosha to the country, and then he will go to Moscow and await my return. I'm upset not to be seeing you for so long — but what's to be done! In general, Petersburg has afforded me many happy moments and the sweet sense of true success, but I'm very weary of this madly hectic life, and it would be good for me to travel.
