Dear and most respected friend !

I have learned that recently you performed my Suite No. 3 at one of your concerts, and courtesy of the masterful manner in which you conducted the orchestra, this composition was a success. I was profoundly delighted and deeply touched by the friendly interest that you continue to show in my music. I thank you with all my heart. It has been a long time since I have had the pleasure of seeing you; you will probably find me greatly changed and aged since our last encounter. I am still working a great deal; the only way to live more or less contentedly is to strive to perfect through hard work the qualities bestowed upon us by nature, and I like to believe that despite all my hair turning white, I can still hope to achieve the degree of perfection to which I have the right to aspire. Nothing encourages me as much in these aspirations as the sympathetic attention of great artists like you, my dear and respected friend. And so you cannot believe how touched and flattered I am by the efforts you wish to make in order to acquaint Berlin with my music.

For a year now I have retired to the country, 2 hours' distance from Moscow, where I live perfectly freely and where nothing prevents me from working diligently.

If I go abroad, I shall certainly pass through Berlin, and it will be a true pleasure for me to be able to shake your hand. Please remember me to Madame Klindworth, and once more receive the expression of my deep gratitude and devotion.
