Moscow, 27th January 1887

Most respected gentlemen directors!

I am extremely honoured by your flattering invitation and grateful for your intention to organise a concert of my works [1]. I have no wish to decline the honour of conducting your fine orchestra, but at the present time I am so weary from the staging of my opera [2] and from urgent work (on the opera "The Enchantress", which must be delivered to Petersburg by Lent), that I should be most happy and content if you were to postpone the planned concert until the autumn. By that time, after a summer respite, I ought to have gathered my strength and be more worthy of the honour of commanding your orchestra.

Could I trouble you to notify me whether my request can be accommodated? If for any reason it is essential that the concert not be postponed, then I should like to know 1) which week in Lent has it been arranged for? 2) whether it possible to have four rehearsals? 3) whether soloists might be involved in the concert? 4) whether a chorus could participate? After obtaining answers to these questions, I shall notify you immediately as to whether I can accept the role of conductor at your concert [3].

With sincere respect I have the honour to be your

P. Tchaikovsky

Tomorrow I am leaving for the country and ask you to reply there: Nikolayevskaya railway, town of Klin, village of Maydanovo.

<references> [1] [2] [3]

  1. 1.0 1.1 The Philharmonic Society directors had written to Tchaikovsky on 24 January/5 February 1887, inviting the composer to conduct a concert comprised entirely of his own works.
  2. 2.0 2.1 The opera Cherevichki, whose first three performances were being conducted by Tchaikovsky, the third taking place on the same day that this letter was written.
  3. 3.0 3.1 Vasily Vasilyevich Vurm (1826-1914), one of the Philharmonic Society's directors, replied on 7/19 February 1887 to say that the concert of Tchaikovsky's works was fixed for 5/17 March 1887, and that the date could not be re-arranged. The composer's letter of reply has not survived, but he evidently agreed to conduct on that date.
